IFS conceives every human being as a system of protective and wounded inner parts led by a core self. These parts, which could also be thought of as “sub-personalities,” all play a role in maintaining a form of equilibrium in the midst of the chaos of the lived experience, especially in times of trauma. Each inner part has its own perspective, interests, memories, and viewpoint, and each inner part works hard to maintain its “self,” but often is the cause of more chaos and dysfunction. These inner parts most frequently are formed early in life in response to family dysfunction, trauma, abuse, and neglect.

After presenting the principles of IFS therapy, the co-presenters of this workshop, Dr. Jim Walsh and Dr. Larry LeNoir, will do an in-depth role-play utilizing a fishbowl setting to illustrate IFS psychotherapy. As this role-play will be with a gambling addicted client, there will be an overview of the fundamentals of Gambling Disorder and its treatment, including a demonstration of assessment for this addiction and a review of the changing demographics of gambling addiction as the legal landscape in this area continues to evolve.
